DOHA: Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad cannot guarantee who would be the best candidate to succeed him as prime minister.
He may stay in office after 2020, until he fix all the issues created by the previous government before resigning, he said in Doha Forum today when replying to a question posed by Aljazeera on whether he would resign after February 2020.
Asked if Anwar Ibrahim would be the best person to take over and would he endorse him, Dr Mahathir said, ” I cannot guarantee who would the best person to take over because I had bad experience with the leaders that I named before, when they took over they do different things.”
He also mentioned that 2020 will not be the final year to solve issues plaguing Malaysia.
We need at least 5 years to fulfil its promises and make changes, he said.
Last week Dr Mahathir promised to hand over power to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim after a summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) countries that will be held in Malaysia in November 2020.
