Don’t repeat BN style media control, Minister told after questioning RTM

Latheefa Koya

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 — The Pakatan Harapan government which claim to be so democratic should not control the media, especially the state TV channels such as RTM, same like what the previous toppled government Barisan Nasional (BN) did.

“BN style media control” should not be allowed to continue in this new Malaysia, said Prominent lawyer Latheefa Koya after a transport minister’s aide questioned RTM for failing to broadcast the minister’s speech at a function live recently.

“This press secretary’s threat to ‘roll heads’ smacks of arrogance! There shouldn’t be any such rules where govt politician’s speeches MUST be broadcast.

“The press secretary of the Transport Minister must realise that RTM is not the government’s propaganda channel! It’s the taxpayers’ money, so we expect fair & balanced reporting. Don’t repeat BN style media control @GobindSinghDeo,” she said on Twitter addressing the Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo.

Latheefa was responding to Anthony Loke`s aid Lim Swee Kuan who issued a statement yesterday questioning RTM for not giving live coverage to the transport minister’s speech during the national Chinese New Year Open House event in Seremban.

“Heads must roll over the highly possible sabotage against the government administration,” he said in a statement and demanded that Gobind take action.

Gobind told reporters yesterday that he has asked RTM to submit a report on why it did not cover the event.
