The former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said DAP is no longer an extreme party.

He said, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang and his son Guan Eng have changed a lot. They were “quite extreme” during his first tenure as prime minister.

“DAP realised that without the support of the Malays, they cannot win. So they opened DAP to the Malays.

“So there are Malays in DAP, and because of this, we see that DAP has become more moderate,” he told Malaysiakini in an interview.

However, Dr Mahathir claims that some DAP members who are still “very extreme”.

On April 5, DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng scolded Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for calling the party ‘extreme’.

He said Dr Mahathir was “wrong, baseless and misguided”, as the party serves all Malaysians, regardless of race and religion.

“Mahathir is wrong when history and facts prove that DAP is a multi-racial party that seeks to represent all Malaysians regardless of race and religion.

“Unlike Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Bersatu) who sees himself as Malay first, DAP sees itself as Malaysian first.

“DAP leaders have gone to prison for defending the rights of both Malays and non-Malays,” Lim Guan Eng said.
