PETALING JAYA: DAP has launched a fund-raising campaign to pay the RM1 million bail for the former finance minister Lim Guan Eng who was charged yesterday with soliciting a bribe in relation to the Penang undersea tunnel project.

“We call upon all Malaysians to unite to fight the political persecution of Lim Guan Eng,” DAP national publicity chief Tony Pua said in a statement.

“We are launching a RM10 one-week fund-raising campaign to pay for Lim’s bail and to repay the amounts we borrowed. We believe that Malaysians will stand up for righteousness to ensure that justice will prevail.

“This is not the first time that Guan Eng has had to fight trumped-up charges by those in power in the court of law,“ said Pua, who is also Damansara MP.

“He is now charged for allegedly ‘asking’ for a 10% profit cut in the undersea tunnel project which was awarded via open tender and evaluated by the most senior Penang and federal government civil servants.

“We call upon all Malaysians to unite to fight the political persecution of Lim. We believe that Malaysians will stand up for righteousness to ensure that justice will prevail,” said Tony Pua.

Supporters are being asked to donate RM10 each in a week-long campaign starting yesterday to raise pay another RM500,000 to the Court on Monday.

Lim faces another two charges from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Malaysia on Monday and Tuesday next week.
