KUALA LUMPUR DEC 9: The COVID-19 Quarantine and Treatment Centre, (PKRC) Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) 2.0 has started its operation today as a result of the surge in the corona virus infections along with the implementation of the screening tests on foreign workers by the Social Security Organization (SOCSO).
Senior and Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, the operation’s scope this time will affect the COVID-19 patients in category 1 (without symptom) and category 2 (light symptom) and will only cater for non-citizens.
“The activation of MAEPS 2.0 also involves the transfers of non-citizens COVID-19 patients from the Ministry of Health Malaysia Training Institute (ILLKM), Sungai Buloh.
“The first phase of PKRC MAEPS 1.0 was in operation on 16th April 2020 but it was closed on 15th July after 1,362 patients had been treated with majority non-citizens (86%) and 14% Malaysians.,” said Ismail in his daily press conference held here today.
He added, PKRC MAEPS will now allocate 10,000 beds placed in three phases compared to only 604 beds in the first phase of its operation.
“The PKRC MAEPS 2.0 will be strictly guarded by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and the Royal Police Malaysia (RPM) since the centre accommodates a high capacity of foreign COVID-19 patients,” said Ismail.
