KUALA LUMPUR: UMNO Vice-President Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said there are two different views on the no contest motion for the two top posts that has been passed during the 2022 UMNO General Assembly, Saturday.
The former Prime Minister said, many had accepted it and the motion was passed during the assembly meanwhile the others are with the opinion that the posts shall be contested in accordance to the UMNO constitution.
“There are views saying that the general assembly is the highest authority in the party as far as making decisions are concerned. However, it is still subject to the UMNO Constitution following Clause 8.1,” Ismail said at a press conference.
Elaborating on the constitution, Ismail Sabri said, some are with the views that in accordance to the constitution; selection of the top posts in the party shall be made once in every three years.
“The word “shall” in the constitution means there is no choice and it (contest) must be done, unless if it is “may” we still have a choice.
“As such the general assembly cannot make a decision that contravenes the constitution,” Ismail Sabri said as quoted by NST.
According to the Bera Member of Parliament, the matter could be referred to the Registrar of Society (RoS) to get its views on the validity of the decision. – Malaysia World News
