KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the Bumiputras are not business oriented – not good in managing their finances and tend to spend a lot on unnecessary things.

In an interview with Focus Malaysia, he said the Malays must be aware that only through doing business they can improve their economic situation, adding that this entails discipline.

“As far as I can see, the Bumiputras are not as business oriented as the other communities (Chinese and Indian communities in Malaysia).

“The Bumiputras still do not know how to handle or manage money, because money to them is something to spend, not to invest.

“So even when they borrow money for capital, part of the money is spent on buying things that have nothing to do with the business,” he was quoted saying in the interview.

However, Dr Mahathir expresses hopes that the younger Bumiputras would change their mindset and practices to be better business managers.

“They (young Malays) can even design airplanes…but they must also remember that they are doing business to also reduce the disparity of income between the Bumiputra and the others.

“The Malays must realise that only through business can they prosper. Business requires discipline,” he added.
