PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said in order to ensure Malaysia remains a global investment destination he has chosen to prioritise political stability over political infighting.
According to Anwar who is also the Minister of Finance, balancing political stability and economic growth required compromise, as investors needed confidence in the country’s stability.
“That is why some people criticise me for appearing to compromise, but I have a choice. If we fight, the economy will plunge. Compromises may limit the measures we can take. Those are the two choices we have to make.
“I choose to maintain political stability and ensure the economy continues to grow,” he said in his closing remarks at the 2027 Budget Engagement Session at the Finance Ministry here Tuesday as quoted by NST.
Anwar stressed that he had chosen to preserve political stability to ensure the country’s economy could continue to grow strongly.
He said strong economic growth would give the government greater fiscal space to increase spending and allocations to meet the needs of the people.
“For me, political stability is very important for our country because people will not invest if politics is unstable,” he said.
He said Malaysia’s strong economic fundamentals currently put the government in a more comfortable position to consider additional allocations.
However, he said every request must be assessed within the broader macroeconomic framework and take into account the country’s financial constraints.
