KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated the swift action taken by the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) to seize a container suspected carrying strategic goods for exports to Israel at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

“This action has proven Malaysia’s strictness to ensure the country will never become the path way for trade that could support or contribute to the brutalities of Israeli regime on the Palestinian people.

“This is also in line with Malaysia’s commitment under the “The Hague Group” and the prohibition that has been enforced since December 2023 on Israel’s ships and ships that carry goods to Israel from using the national port,” Anwar said in a Facebook post, Saturday.

Anwar added, Malaysia will continue to uphold the humanitarian principles, fairness and international laws in defending the rights and the moral of the people of Palestine.

Earlier it was reported that the MCBA on Saturday seized a container at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), Johor, over suspicions that it contained goods destined for export to Israel.

According to MCBA the seizure was made following intelligence received by the agency, which then conducted an inspection of the container.

“Based on preliminary checks, the shipment is suspected of violating Item 15 of the Second Schedule of the Customs (Prohibition of Exports) Order 2023, which prohibits the direct or indirect export of goods to Israel.

“MCBA will conduct further investigations with relevant authorities and agencies to verify the nature, specifications, intended use and classification of the goods.

“This includes determining whether the goods are strategic items subject to controls under the Strategic Trade Act 2010 (Act 708) and relevant subsidiary legislation,” it said in a statement Saturday.

MCBA said Malaysia would not compromise on actions that contravened the country’s policies, sanctions and laws relating to Israel adding that the government’s position on the matter remained clear and consistent.

“Any attempt to export goods directly or indirectly to Israel in contravention of the law and government regulations will be dealt with firmly,” it said.
