A surgeon in India is planning to transplant a womb into a trans woman who was born a male to make him pregnant, the Daily Mail reported.

Dr Narendra Kaushik, who runs a gender reassignment clinic in New Delhi, said he is ‘very, very optimistic’ he can make it succeed.

‘Every transgender woman wants to be as female as possible — and that includes being a mother,’ he was quoted as saying in The Mirror.

‘The way towards this is with a uterine transplant, the same as a kidney or any other transplant. This is the future. We cannot predict exactly when this will happen but it will happen very soon.

‘We have our plans and we are very very optimistic about this,’ he added.

The cost of the womb transplants will be around £50,000.

According to the Daily Mail, the operation will involve taking the reproductive organs from a dead donor or a patient who has transitioned the other way and had theirs removed.

It was reported only one attempt before to insert a womb into a trans woman in the past — but she died from complications just months later.

Impregnating a trans woman requires the use of IVF and a C-section, because they do not have a fully functioning vagina.
