PETALING JAYA: The RM116.7 million cash seized from ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak`s residence by the police in their probe into 1MDB belongs to Umno party, Najib Razak insisted today.
“Umno is now engaging lawyers to negotiate with authorities for the return of the money,” he said.
The party’s constitution stipulates that the president of the party should manage the funds, he explained.
As Umno president, he said, he was in charge of distributing the funds during the general election (GE14).
Dr Mahathir Mohamad used to manage UMNO party`s funds when he was the party president from 1981 to 2003, Najib said in a Facebook post.
“After BN’s shock defeat, the money was transferred to an apartment in Pavillion Kuala Lumpur as a temporary measure.
“But before we could decide what we were going to do with the money, police raided the apartment and seized the cash.
“The transfer of the money from the Prime Minister’s Office (to the apartment) was not a secret,” Najib admitted.
