Tunisian suspect of Berlin attack shot dead in Italy

A Tunisian identified as Anis Amri, 24, has been shot dead by Italian police in Milan, Italy.

Anis Amri is believed to be the suspect of the Christmas market attack in Berlin which left 12 people dead and more than 50 injured this week.

He was the most wanted man in Europe. As soon as he entered Italy, the police immediately identified him and neutralized him, police officers said.

Amri was shot dead by a police officer when he had just arrived at Milan, Italy around 3 a.m. on Friday after he shot another officer who had asked for his documents.

The officer, whom Mr. Amri shot, identified as Cristian Movio, 35, was wounded in the shoulder and needs to undergo surgery, but the injury did not appear to be serious.

The other officer, who shot Mr. Amri, was as Luca Scatà, 29.

Panorama, an Italian newsmagazine, reported that Mr. Amri was killed in a routine traffic stop at 3 a.m. in the Piazza I Maggio in northern Milan.

However, whether Mr. Amri had any direct contact with the terrorist group — or whether he had any accomplices — is not yet known.

“The person who attacked our police officers was killed,” Interior Minister Marco Minniti said at a news conference. “There is absolutely no doubt that the person who was killed was Anis Amri, the suspect in the terrorist attack in Berlin.”
