PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) today announced that a total of 9,773,571 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in six states on August 12, 2023 with early voting set for August 8.

EC chairman, Abdul Ghani Salleh said, the nomination of candidates in the states namely Selangor, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will be held on July 29.

The polls will be held following the six states previously decided not to hold their elections simultaneously with the 15th general election (GE15) in November 2022.

“The period for the election campaign is set for 14 days while the closing date for early voting applications is July 8 for Malaysians residing overseas, July 11 for agencies or organisations and July 26 for the media, army, police and election officials,” Ghani said.

However, he said, the postal voting applications for Malaysians residing overseas, agencies and organisations can also be made online.

Earlier it was reported that applications for domestic and international postal voting for the six state polls were open from June 15.
Ghani also highlighted that the state elections involve 3,450 polling centres with 17,425 polling stations and channels and out of which 260 are early voting centres consisting of 377 polling stations.

“The EC has appointed 985 electoral officers and assistants while 252 election campaign enforcement teams involving the police, local authorities and party representatives have also been set up,” Ghani said. –Malaysia World News
