39 Omicron variant cases detected from Umrah travellers, 4 local cases infected from close contacts –Minister Khairy

PUTRAJAYA JAN.4: Another 58 positive COVID-19 from Omicron variant had been detected via Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) carried out by the Medical Research Institute (MRI) recently bringing the cumulative total to122 and out of which 117 were imported cases while five from local infections.

Minister of Health, Khairy Jamaluddin said, from the 58 cases 54 were imported and out of which 39 from Saudi Arabia; United Arab Emirates (7); United Kingdom (4); Nigeria (2); Kazakhstan (1) and France (4) while another four cases were detected locally believed to have been infected from the Umrah travellers who were positive COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Khairy added, from the Omicron variant cases reported, 761 cases (58.2 per cent) were among the Umrah travellers.

“The PCR Genotyping Assay tests that were carried out by MRI on 1,774 positive COVID-19 cases among travellers arriving in Malaysia from 1 until 31st December 2021 had found that 1,220 (68.8 per cent) samples had shown presumptive Omicron variant.

“From 1,220 presumptive Omicron variant, 928 (76.1 per cent) involving samples from travellers who arrived from Saudi Arabia. Four Omicron variant cases detected locally were the close contacts of the positive COVID-19 Omicron variant who returned from Umrah in Saudi Arabia on 12th Dec. 2021 and confirmed positive Omicron variant on 24th Dec. 2021,” said Khairy in a statement here today.

Khairy also reminded the individuals who have been directed to undergo compulsory quarantine at home or residence to adhere to the instructions and stay in a separate room and not meeting the family members or other individuals failing which will cause the spread of COVID-19 including Omicron variant to the family members and the community. –Malaysia World News
