KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said 31 Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Umno-led Barisan Nasional (BN) will continue supporting the Perikatan Nasional government until a confidence vote is held in September.
“Our stance is that we will uphold the King’s decree for the current government to continue its administration till its legitimacy is tested in Parliament,” Datuk Seri Ismail told the reporters at a press conference today (August 6).
Umno MPs make up 38 of BN’s 42 lawmakers, according to NST.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional needs at least a slim majority of 113 of the 222 seats in Parliament to stay in power. It is left with at only 104 MPs, after some Umno MPs withdrew, far short of a simple majority.
But Muhyiddin is confidence he still commands the confidence of the Lower House and he will submit himself to a confidence vote when Parliament next convenes on Sept 6.
