LARUT: A total of 282,561 illegal immigrants have registered under the recalibration programme as of Thursday that permits them to return to their countries voluntarily.

Minister of Home Affairs, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said, the programme had been extended until end of June 2022 and 243,297 illegal immigrants had been repatriated.

“We will take firm action on illegal immigrants (without documents) who refused to take this offer as the process will last until the end of this month.

“Illegal immigrants are those staying in the country without documents, no valid documents or verification made by the immigration,” Hamzah said to reporters at a gathering at Kampung Anak Kurau here today.
According to Hamzah employers who hire them will also be taken to the court.

Hamzah said those who want to join the recalibration programme must have valid travel document approved by their own embassies and possess plane or ferry tickets to return to their countries.

The Minister who is the MP for Larut said illegal immigrants could register to be sent back to their countries or apply to work legally through Manpower Recalibration Programme.

“The government had received almost RM1 billion in levies including from this programme this year” Hamzah said as reported by Bernama.

In another development Hamzah said the government will implement tighter controls at the Malaysia-Thailand border following Thailand’s move to legalise medical cannabis that makes the substance to be more easily available. –Malaysia World News
