COVID-19 cases remain high due to screening of foreign workers

PUTRAJAYA DEC.10: Malaysia has recorded 2,234 new COVID-19 cases being the highest since the outbreak of the pandemic, contributing to the cumulative total to 78,499 with 11,867 active cases under treatment in the hospitals.

Director General of Health, Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said, today’s daily cases have superseded the record of 2,188 on 24th September 2020 due to the Teratai cluster.

Dr. Noor Hisham said, Selangor is still leading with 1,428 cases (63.9%) out of which 1,321 cases (93.2%) are from the close contacts that have been screened and involved in related clusters namely Seruling and Hentian.

“In Selangor, 842 cases (59.0%) are from Seruling cluster and 315 cases (22.1%) from Hentian. The COVID-19 cases in Selangor are expected to remain high as a result of the Foreign Workers’ Screen Tests Programme carried out by SOCSO and the proactive actions taken by employers in Klang Valley.

“Up to date, the close contact tracing and active tracing of cases on the ground have been conducted and low risk cases will be sent to the MAEPS 2.0 and Sungai Buloh Hospital,” said Dr. Noor Hisham in a statement here today.

The other two states with high cases are Sabah with 274 cases (12.3%) while Kuala Lumpur 136 cases (6.1%).

The Ministry of Health (MOH) in the statement also mentioned that 1,112 patients have been discharged bringing the cumulative total to 66,236 (84.4% from the grand total of cases).
Meanwhile 160 cases (7.2%) COVID-19 cases are related to the clusters at the Temporary Detention Centres (PTS) and prisons involving Tembok (104 cases), Bakti (45), Rumah Merah (8) and PTS Sibuga (3).

Dr. Noor Hisham said, 124 cases had been admitted to the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 60 cases needed respiratory aids while three deaths had been recorded adding to the death toll to 396 (0.50 % from the grand total).

On another development there are five new clusters formed today namely the Jalan Bukit Construction Site cluster involving Hulu Langat district in Selangor. Until 10th Dec.109 had been screened and out of which 47 cases were detected with positive COVID-19.

The Condong Construction Site cluster had affected the district of Lembah Pantai, Titiwangsa and Cheras in Kuala Lumpur. Until 10th Dec. 291 individuals had been screened and 24 cases were detected with positive COVID-19.

The Jalan Stadium Construction Site cluster was formed in the district of Titiwangsa and Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur. Until 10th Dec. 97 individuals had been screened out of which 15 cases were detected with positive COVID-19.

On the other hand the Jalan Dalam cluster had affected Kulai district, Batu Pahat and Johor Bahru in Johor where 13 cases had been infected with COVID-19 from 108 individuals that had been screened. While the Tenun Merah cluster in Batu Pahat district, Johor had infected 23 individuals after 287 had been screened.

The states with new cases today include Selangor with 1,428 cases, Sabah (274), Kuala Lumpur (136), Negeri Sembilan (67), Kedah (14), Penang (42), Johor (100), Perak (115), Sarawak (1), Pahang (45), Kelantan (3), Melaka (5), Terengganu (3) and Putrajaya (1). – Malaysia World News
