COVID-19: New cluster formed on a ship with travel history to Japan

PUTRAJAYA: A new isolated cluster had been identified on a ship at Bintulu, Sarawak following four people were detected with positive COVID-19.

Health Director-General, Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah said, the cluster was identified when five crew members of the ship had symptoms and went for screen tests.

Dr. Noor Hisham said out of five, four persons had been detected with positive COVID-19 while the other individual is waiting for the result.

“The four positive COVID-19 cases were imported which had affected two Malaysians while the other two were non-citizens. They were on board the ship with a travel history to Japan.

“All the four are now undergoing treatment at Bintulu Hospital, Sarawak. The cluster will not have the risk of transmitting COVID-19 to the community as it is an imported cluster and isolated on the ship,” said Dr. Noor Hisham in a statement here on Thursday (Aug.20).

He added an active case detection and screening test the close contacts are commencing now. Several measures to avoid and control the transmission of the corona virus like disinfecting bacteria and sanitization processes had been done on the ship.

Meanwhile, the statement added, there were five imported new COVID-19 cases involving two Malaysians and three non-citizens. Four from the five new cases were detected onboard a ship from Japan and had formed a new cluster.

The five new cases had brought the accumulative total to 9,240 while there was

no death recorded on Thursday bringing the death toll remaining at 125 or 1.35% Another one new case was detected in Selangor with one person arriving from Bangladesh had been detected with positive COVID-19.

It was also reported that seven patients had been discharged bringing the accumulative total to 8,932 or 96.70% while 183 cases were active with seven admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and four needed respiratory aids. -Malaysia World News
