KUALA LUMPUR AUG.5: The peacekeeping team of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) or MALBATT 850-7 as one of the participants in the United Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in South Lebanon is prepared to give Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) if the commitment is needed by UNIFIL.
MAF Chief, Tan Sri Affendi Buang said, MALBATT 850-7 that has been in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon since October 2019 will give the necessary assistance in the incident that happened in Beirut, on Tuesday.
In the incident a powerful blast in port warehouses near Central Beirut storing high explosive material had reportedly killed more than 100 people and nearly 4,000 injured and sent seismic shockwaves and shook the ground across the Lebanese capital.
Meanwhile, President Michel Aoun said, 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate used in fertilizers and bombs had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures and said it was “unacceptable”.
He called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday (today) and said a two week state of emergency should be declared.
Affendi added, the Malaysian peacekeeping team in Lebanon continues its operational routines under Resolution 1701, Security Council of the United Nations and always committed and prepared to carry out its work and responsibilities in helping to restore peace in the country.
“The staffs of MALBATT’s team are in good health, safe and highly motivated and not involved in the incident that happened in Beirut, Lebanon,” said Affendi in a statement here today.
Affendi stressed that MAF is following the current development and well prepared for any possibilities that need further actions to be taken by MALBATT.
“MAF extended condolences to the people of Lebanon that were affected by the incident,” aid Affendi. –Malaysia World News
