PETALING JAYA: Since it was announced that Former Prime Minister Najib Razak`s step son, Riza Aziz was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the court, political tension sparked once again in Malaysia in the midst of  the deadly Covid pandemic.

A joint statement issued today by many opposition leaders from Pakatan Harapan claims that other big personalities and political leaders who have been charged with money laundering and corruption during Pakatan Hrapan`s era would now be discharged and freed too, same as in Riza `s case.

“The 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case of Riza Aziz, who was let off with a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, is a sign that all other big cases involving political leaders would also reach the same settlement.

“This is a bad practice and destroys the reform efforts which were initiated 22 months ago, ” the joint statement said on Sunday (May 17).

Riza, who was charged during PH time of five counts linked to 1MDB scandal and money laundering  involving US$248mil (RM1.25bil),  was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the Sessions Court on May 14.

The political crisis in Malaysia has started since February after Dr Mahathir resigned from his post as the Prime Minister, and Muhyiddin Yassin and Perikatan Nasional (UMNO, PAS, and Bersatu)  toppled Pakatan Harapan and took over.

The king appointed Muhyiddin Yassin the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia on March 1.

However, Pakatan leaders are not happy and they do not want to recognize Muhyiddin`s premiership;  they want to pass a motion of no-confidence against him in the parliament, claiming he does not have the MPs majority support. They also call the current government as illegitimate as it does not have the mandate of the people.

The joint statement was signed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in capacity as Pakatan chairman and Opposition chief, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu and Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
