Frankfurt: Thomas Schaefer, finance minister of Germany’s Hesse state which includes Frankfurt, had been found dead near a railway track on Saturday.
State premier Volker Bouffier yesterday said, Thomas had committed suicide apparently after becoming “deeply worried” over the country’ s economy crisis caused by the coronavirus.
“We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad,” Bouffier’s office said in a statement.
Bouffier added that Schaefer, 54. who was Hesse’s finance chief for 10 years, had been working “day and night” to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic, Aljazeera quoted in a report today.
“Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried,” said Bouffier.
“It’s precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him,” he added.
From initial investigations and witnesses, the police also concluded that Schaefer died by suicide.
