PUTRAJAYA Feb.27: Dr Mahathir today hinted that Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin could be the next Prime Minister of Malaysia as he has the ability to form a Unity Government and willing to work with UMNO and PAS

Interim Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad said Muhyiddin is quite prepared to accept the overall politicians from various political parties (UMNO and PAS).

“There were various possibilities that we discussed, including the possibility of Muhyiddin becoming a candidate for the post of prime minister.

“If everybody chooses him, I’m okay.

“If he gets a full majority in the Parliament, then he has the right to become the prime minister, ” Dr Mahathir told reporters after launching the Economic Stimulus Package yesterday.

It was also reported that all PAS and Umno MPs have signed a statutory declaration (SD) in support of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the candidate for prime minister, says the PAS deputy president, Datuk Tuan Ibrahim.

“When Dr Mahathir announced his resignation, Muafakat Nasional signed an SD for Muhyiddin,” he said.

Dr Mahathir also revealed today that “the Parliament will determine who will be the next prime minister on March 2, based on majority votes.”

Dr Mahathir had an audience with Yang Dipertuan Agong at the Istana Negara this morning, after the King interviewed all 222 MPs in the last two days to determine who had the confidence of the majority to become prime minister and form the government.

“The King has met with all MPs to find somebody with majority support. Since there is no distinct majority yet then the right forum will be the Parliament,“ he said at a press conference.

Dr. Mahathir who had delivered the 2020 Economic Stimulus Package at the Putra Perdana, here this afternoon said that only the new Prime Minister can determine the Cabinet ministers.

“Under the Unity Government, the ministers will be appointed as individuals even though they are members of certain political parties. They do not represent their parties,” he reiterated.

On Wednesday, Dr. Mahathir as the Interim Prime Minister suggested the Unity Government that might be formed would not be based on who won and from which political party but more on capable individuals who could contribute effectively to the nation, adding that the functions of the ministers are to serve the people not their political parties.

Meanwhile, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) Johor state government has collapsed and it has been replaced today by a new coalition between Bersatu and Umno. So PH is no longer ruling in Johor.

In another development today, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has agreed to resume his role as the chairman of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu),

Party secretary-general Datuk Marzuki Yahya said in a statement, “after consideration, Mahathir has agreed to return as Bersatu chairman effective immediately.”

For two years, since Pakatan Harapan won the 9 May General Elections, Anwar Ibrahim has been expecting and waiting  Dr Mahathir to hand over power to him and become the 8th prime minister of Malaysia. But unfortunately Dr Mahathir resigned on Monday without handing power to him as promised two years ago.- Malaysia World News
