ASEAN Defence Ministers agreed to resolve COVD-19 collectively

The ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) that was held in Hanoi, Vietnam on 19 February (Wednesday) has agreed for a joint statement on Defence Cooperation Against Disease Outbreak (Corona Virus – COVD-19) to elevate cooperation collectively.

The Joint Statement includes – Enhance practical collaboration among ASEAN defence establishments to organise information and best practice sharing activities and with external partners, bilaterally or multilaterally.

This includes considering to conduct a tabletop exercise within the framework of the ASEAN Center of Military Medicine which Vietnam is ready to host at the earliest opportunity in dealing with COVD-19.

Meanwhile, the presence of the Minister of Defence, Mohamad Sabu at the meeting had showcased Malaysia’s commitment was at the highest defence diplomacy contributing towards regional peace security and stability of the region.

Mohamad had also expressed Malaysia’s support for Vietnam ASEAN 2020 Chairmanship and stressed that ASEAN Member States (AMS) should focus on strengthening regional unity and solidarity and complementing with one another towards ASEAN community building.

“We acknowledged the good work that ADMM had produced and believed that under Vietnam’s leadership, existing initiatives would be continued while exploring new opportunities to enhance ADMM’s cohesive performance and contribution to the maintenance of regional stability,” he said at the ADMM meeting

In line with Malaysia’s aim to operationalise the ASEAN Militaries Ready Group on Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief (AMRG on HADR) this year Mohamad also took the opportunity to thank AMS for the support given to Malaysia in developing this initiative.

At the sideline of the meeting, Mohamad also participated in the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting with Australia and conducted a bilateral meeting with the Australian Minister of Defence, Senator Linda Reynolds.-Malaysia World News
