KUALA LUMPUR: The RM2.6 billion was a personal donation from late Saudi Arabia King to Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak, the former prime minister of Malaysia, the High Court was told today.

Former Minister of Islamic Affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom told the court in his witness statement that he knew about the donation, but he did not know whether Najib received it or not, as it was kept from public and cabinet knowledge.

“The late King of Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah Abdul Aziz Al-Saud did mention that he would send the donation soon  to Najib’s personal account.

“The King was worried that if the donation was sent into the account of any political entity, it would complicate the process,” the fifth witness Jamil Khir said.

He also claimed he was with Najib when the two leaders met in the palace and talked about the donation in 2010.

Deputy public prosecutor Datuk V. Sithambaram asked if Najib returned money amounting to US$620 million (RM2.03 billion), Jamil Khir said he did not know.

When asked by Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, who represented Najib, on why the donation from Saudi Arabia was kept secret, the witness said it was because it was a personal donation to Najib.
