KUALA LUMPUR: During today’s High Court hearing of Najib’s application for a stay, lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said that the Inland Revenue Board’s lawsuit against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to pay RM1.69 billion in taxes from 2011 to 2017 was a political move aimed to oust Najib from the political arena.
He said this action was meant to kill off najib ’s political career, especially when they saw him a strong opposition who helped Barisan Nasional to win 5 by elections.
The Pekan MP previously said he could not pay the sum of 1.69 billion.
“Once my client is labelled a bankrupt, he will be out of the political arena.
“Politically he is gone,” Muhammad Shafee said when applying for the stay.
Muhammad Shafee argued that the matter should only be heard after the end of Najib’s related trials involving SRC International Sdn Bhd corruption trial and 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
