Maszlee resigns as the education minister following Dr Mahathir advice

PUTRAJAYA: Maszlee Malik has suddenly announced his resignation from his position as education minister today.

“On the advice of the prime minister (Dr Mahathir, and in the spirit of loyalty to the party leadership and the government, with a heavy heart, I, Maszlee Malik, would like to resign as minister effective Jan 3, 2020,”the PPBM Simpang Renggam MP said in a press conference.

His resignation is effective starting from tomorrow (Januany 3).

He resigned because he was targeted and pressured by many quarters over various issues and policies since assuming his position after Pakatan Harapan won the general election 2018.

Maszlee also thanked Dr. Mahathir for giving him the opportunity to lead the Education Ministry.

“It is the best gift I could have asked for as an academician and an educator, ” he said.

In a statement released today following his resignation, Dr Mahathir said he will choose and announce who to take over the education ministry.

Maszlee drew severe backlash against him from many critics and netizens over the Jawi issue, the recognition of Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), and the implementation of the free breakfast in schools.

His resignation came after the recent announcement by Dr Mahathir that a cabinet reshuffle would take place soon.

Some sources speculate former Umno man Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed would be appointed as a minister in the coming soon cabinet.

Mustapa had jumped ship to PPBM after the defeat of Barisan Nasional in the 14th General Election.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he has accepted Maszlee Malik’s resignation and will decide on who will replace the latter as the next education minister.
