The oldest Malay-language newspaper Utusan Malaysia may close shop, says its Executive Chairman

Utusan Melayu staffs picketing in front of the office at Jalan Chan Sow Lin this afternoon demanding the company to pay their salaries in full since July till mid -August 2019.

Kuala Lumpur: The National Union ofJournalists Malaysia (NUJM),Utusan Melayu branch will hold a picket on a weekly basis if the company fails to pay the monthly salaries of the union members that have not been paid for one and a half month since July to mid-August 2019.

NUJM President, Mohd. Taufek Razak said, the series of pickets will be held in front of Utusan Melayu office at Jalan 5, off Chan Sow Lin to ensure Utusan Melayu (M) Bhd.will pay the monthly salaries of 200 NUJM members, EPF contribution, union fees, income tax, zakat and bank loan reductions.

He said, the company has also failed to pay the salaries of executives who have received RM2,000 for June and none for July and August.

“In the meeting with the management team of Utusan led by Executive Chairman, Datuk Abd.Aziz Sheikh Fadzir at the Industrial Relation Department in Putrajaya this morning, the company had mentioned that it could not afford to pay staffs’ salaries.

“If the situation continues said Datuk Aziz the company has no choice but to close shop,” Taufek said to Malaysia World News at Utusan today.

About 200 people including the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) takers participated at the one hour picket in front of Utusan Melayu office from 1pm until 2pm today.

During the gathering, the workers chanted, ” We are the defendents of Malays…Where is UMNO?’ Give us our pay, where is our pay? We have done our work….”
