SHAH ALAM, June 29 — Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi can come back to his post as the president of UMNO party at any time he likes, without seeking approval from the Umno supreme council, the former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.
According to the party constitution, Zahid still has the right to come back to his post and lead again, Najib added.
“Zahid decided to go on garden leave himself. It is up to him whether he wants to come back, or not.
“If he wishes to return to his duties as president, he does not need the approval of the Supreme Council,’’ he told reporters yesterday at his Hari Raya open house which saw the attendance more than 2,000 supporters.
Zahid, who is also the former deputy prime minister, left his post as UMNO president on December 18 last year and his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has taken up his duties.
Zahid is currently facing a total of 87 charges related to corruption, bribery and abuse of power which he denies all.
