The appointment of Latheefa Koya as the head of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has stunned many observers and received mixed reactions amongst local politicians not only from the opposition but also from the government supporters.
Meanwhile, the public is left wondering why has Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull all of a sudden resigned as the head of MACC and was replaced by Latheefa Koya.
“Did MACC Chief resign on his will or was he fired from office?” a passenger was heard asking a friend.
However, the question remained unanswered.
Has MACC Chief resigned or was he fired for having failed in Dr Mahathir’s war against corruption?
Shukri Abdull, who was appointed after the May 9 General Elections last year (2018), was in charge for investigating several corruption cases involving the previous government and 1MDB scandal but resigned before completing his mission, which should end in 2020.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said, the replacement and appointment of a new MACC Chief was part of the government’s institution reformation process.
This statement has also raised a big question mark – Did Shukri Abdull fail to reform the MACC institution or has he done his job perfectly?
Lawmakers, politicians, and activists have been talking and analyzing the appointment of the female lawyer over a few days now but nobody has explained or asked for an explanation to why Shukri Abdull resigned before his term ended.
There are speculations saying that he was asked to resign as he failed in his 1MDB investigation.
A source told Malaysia World News (MWN) that Shukri Abdull has allegedly failed to investigate a former high ranked officer who was covering up and protecting the Former Prime Minister Najib Razak and other previous leaders accused to have been involved in 1MDB scandal.
Shukri Abdull lately seemed to have received a lot of criticisms and backlashes for not having investigated the suspect and brought him to court to be charged.
Latheefa has a good reputation as a human rights lawyer. She has been a vocal advocate in standing up against injustice, defending public interest and human rights.
Latheefa’s appointment was made by the Prime Minister Dr Mahathir without referring to the cabinet, on June 4. It is more shocking that Latheefa, an Executive Director, Lawyers for Liberty is replacing Shukri Abdull, who quits before his tenure ends in 2020.-Malaysia World News
