Most of our graduates cannot communicate in English, this is a problem, says Daim

KUALA LUMPUR: Former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin acknowledged yesterday that Malaysia won`t be a competitive nation at the International level if Malaysian young people cannot communicate well in English.

“The problem is sometimes thinking and communication. Most of our graduates cannot communicate. This is a problem. When someone questions in English they cannot answer. Whereas knowledge is English,” he said.

The increasingly poor ability to speak and understand English among Malaysian young people hinders the country from being globally competitive.

Today`s young people, students seem to have difficulties to speak and communicate in English and the education system is much to be blamed.

“We must think of the future. Where are we bringing our nation to?

“We don’t want to penalise our future generation. So let’s think. Do we want to compete or not? Compete in education. Put aside sentiments, and think of our future, our children,” Daim said in an interview with Astro Awani last night.
