PUTRAJAYA, May 6 — The new Chief Justice, Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on Monday claimed social media had created negative perceptions on the judiciary.
“What’s happening, it’s not based on facts and just based on perception.
“Social media is one of the main reasons for the negative perception of the society towards the judiciary,” she told reporters during a press conference in her office at the Justice Palace in Putrajaya yesterday (May 6, 2019).
The public write on social media without deep knowledge in the field of justice. Therefore, the mainstream media should help by reporting accurately the case thus changing the perception of society, she said.
“The media should probably play a role. Especially the mainstream media.
“To report cases accurately, we have to prepare summary for the press.
“The reason behind that is when we issue that press summary of the judgement, then it’s easier to understand rather than the whole judgement being given to the press.
“That means, you all have a responsibility to report it accurately,” she added.
Asked about her main challenges in holding the highest position of the national judiciary, she said she has to maintain public confidence and manage the public’s perception of the judiciary.
