Thirty-seven people executed on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia for links with terrorism

RIYADH: Thirty-seven Saudis have been executed for links with terrorism, the Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday, Arab News reported.

According to official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the death penalty was implemented on them “for adopting extremist terrorist ideologies and forming terrorist cells to corrupt and disrupt security as well as spread chaos and provoke sectarian strife.”

The executions were carried out in Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, the Eastern Province, Qassim and Asir.

In a statement, the ministry said that they had planned to bomb security headquarters and kill security personnel.

According to Middle East Eye, thirty-two of those executed were from the kingdom’s Shia minority and a number of them were juveniles when they were initially arrested.

Rights group Reprieve told Middle East Eye several of those executed were detained during peaceful protests.

Human rights organisations have said that many of those killed had been pro-democracy activists who were subjected to torture and unfair trials.
