MoU to increase Malaysia-Lao PDR defence cooperation

KUALA LUMPUR: National Defence Minister of Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR), General Chansamone Chanyalath’s visit to Malaysia from 21 to 23 March was a testament of commitments for both countries to promote bilateral defence cooperation.

In this regard Chansamone and Malaysian Minister of Defence, Mohamad Sabu signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Bilateral Defence Cooperation at the Ministry of Defence here on Friday.

Both countries were optimistic that the signing of the MoU would increase interactions and initiate deeper bilateral defence cooperation that would serve their common interests.

As part of Chansamone’s first official visit to the country since he assumed office in April 2016, he called on Mohamad Sabu at the Defence Ministry where his arrival was accorded with a Guard of Honour comprising personnel from the First Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) accompanied by RAMD Centre Band.

“During the call, both ministers acknowledged the existing friendly relations between the two countries. Capitalising on the excellent spirit of cordiality, mutual respect and understanding, they emphasized the visit was a reflection of their commitments in promoting cooperation,” said the ministry in its statement.

 Chansamone also visited the National Defence University of Malaysia (NDUM) where he was briefed by Lt. Gen. Datuk Abdul Halim Jalal, Vice Chancellor, on the role of NDUM as a premier defence university for leadership and professional development, knowledge dissemination and application of defence science and technology as well as policy research.

 The Lao Defence Minister also visited BHIC Aeroservices Sdn. Bhd. a subsidiary company of Boustead Heavy Industries Corporation Berhad (BHIC). .

The defence cooperation between Malaysia and Lao PDR is gradually but assuredly progressing underpinned by the two nations’ close working relationship as members of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM).

Their excellent interaction at the ADMM level has ensured a solid platform for both countries to contribute towards the continued peace, stability and security in the South East Asian region. – Malaysia World News
