KUALA LUMPUR: Skilled migrants or skilled foreigners who reside in Malaysia can now apply for citizenship, announced the new prime minister of Malaysia Tun Dr, Mahathir.
Foreigners with certain skills such as in IT will be welcomed to come and live in Malaysia, as the new government (Pakatan Harapan) is planning to amend the immigration policy for foreign workers.
“If the foreigners come with certain skills that we want, we would invite them to stay in this country and even become citizens if they want to,” said Dr. Mahathir at the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce luncheon here yesterday.
A skilled worker is any worker who has special skill, training, knowledge, and (usually acquired) ability in their work. A skilled worker may have a college or university qualification.
Australia, New Zealand and many developed nations have been implementing such immigration policies and programs for many years. For example, if a foreigner or immigrant has skills, qualifications or experience that New Zealand needs he or she may be able to apply for a resident visa under the Skilled Migrant Category.
However, the Skilled Migrant Category is a points system based on factors such as age, work experience, your qualifications, and an offer of skilled employment. You must also be aged 55 or under, and meet English language, health, and character requirements, according to www.newzealandnow.govt.nz
“We would like to have more people with the brains to come and live in Malaysia and contribute towards industrialization programs.
“Actually we’re studying to try and find a proper policy for foreign workers…they are many wrong things being done (with regard to their recruitment),” said Dr. Mahathir – Malaysia World News.
