PUTRAJAYA: Election Commission (EC) Chairman, Mohd. Hashim Abdullah said EC has invited international observers from 14 countries including the management bodies for election from members of ASEAN, Commonwealth, Asia and Europe and Study Centre and Support for Election based in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
He added, 14 non- governmental organisations and universities’ representatives are also invited to observe at the polling centres.
“The 14th General Election will be on the 9th May (Wednesday) while the names of candidates for the election will be announced on 28th April 2018.
“The dates were decided in a special meeting held by EC today following the dissolution of Parliament effective on 7th April 2018 as consented by Yang di-Pertuan Agong and followed by the official announcement by the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat and later by speakers of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) for all states,” he said at a press conference at his office today.
Meanwhile, he said, 5th May (Saturday) will be for early voters and 9th May (Wednesday) for the General Election. The period for the election campaign is 11 days starting from the date of election candidates’ announcement until 11.45pm on 8th May 2018.
“EC also appoints 222 managing officers that will monitor all election activities during the campaign with 445 enforcement teams while 259,391 workers are appointed among members of the public to help administer the 14th GE.
“The centres for polling occupy 8,989 building premises, 28,995 places for casting votes or channels and the cost incurred for the 14th GE is RM500 million,” he added.
He also announced the number of registered voters as of first quarter of 2017 totalling 14,940,624 and among them, 14,636,716 are “normal voters” (public), 300,255 are early voters that include army/police and spouses while 3,653 are not in the country.
