KUALA LUMPUR: The government of Malaysia will only send its armed forces to Palestine if the United Nation (UN) requests.
The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) had been involved in many peacekeeping missions globally but there were all on UN’s requests, said Deputy Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd. Johari Baharum.
“We cannot do as we like without the consent of the UN.
“We have sent our armed forces as peacekeepers to Lebanon on UN’s request,” he told the media after presenting several awards to MAF’s personnel and civil servants in conjunction with Ministry of Defence’s Innovation Day at the MINDEF Auditorium on Thursday.
Mohd. Johari was replying to a question relating to Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein’s statement earlier last week.
Malaysian Defense Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein last week said the country’s armed forces are ready to play a role following U.S. President Donald Trump’s official recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
The statement came a day after protesters gathered in front of the American embassy in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
“Armed Forces and the MAF are definitely ready,” said Hishammuddin.
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Thursday called on Muslims worldwide to strongly oppose any recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Fifty-seven members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) unanimously recognized Baitulmaqdis (Jerusalem) as the capital of Palestine at the OIC Summit held in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday.
Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said, all 57 member countries of OIC including Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed that the US decision to recognize Baitulmaqdis as the capital of Israel was not valid.
He said the Palestine-Israel conflict should be resolved in bilateral negotiations as a two-state solution and not unilateral as decided by US President Donald Trump recently.
On Wednesday, Najib firmly expressed Malaysia’s stand to condemn and reject the unilateral decision made by the US to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Najib said, the consensus agreement and resolutions were documented in the Istanbul Declaration and will be handed to the Security Council of the United Nations for further actions.
