His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V reminds UPNM to maintain its excellent legacy

SUNGAI BESI: The excellent legacy of the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) should be strengthened and preserved besides ensuring its  relevance with the present time.

His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong XV, Sultan Muhammad V said, the community of UPNM is responsible to determine the future and set the excellent history of the university.

“UPNM is the only public university that focuses on security and defence aspects. I am glad that the university has made several achievements during the eleven years of its establishment since 2006,”said His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V in his speech at the 8th UPNM Convocation at Tun Templer Hall, Sungai Besi Camp on Tuesday.

His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V said after he accepted his proclamation as the Chancellor of UPNM here today. The “watikah” or letter of authority was read by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh while the “chokmar” was presented to His Majesty by UPNM Vice Chancellor General Tan Sri Zulkifli Zainal Abidin.

One of the UPNM graduates upon receiving her scroll from His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V at the 8th UPNM Convocation on Tuesday, with the presence of Hishammudddin Tun Hussein and other important guests.

Among those present at the historical event were Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Pro-Chancellors of UPNM, Board Members of UPNM, Vice Chancellors/ Rectors of Public Universities, Chief of Malaysian Armed Forces, General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor and Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

His Majesty also reminded the graduates that to be a learned and knowledgeable person is a special gift from the almighty and thus it is a trust that should be shouldered in the best possible ways.

“With the useful knowledge they have, I am confident that the graduates are able to contribute to the religion, race and the nation. They should also be thankful to their parents for their efforts and prayers for them.

“Graduates also should appreciate the good deeds of lecturers and military instructors for giving them the best knowledge,” His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V added.

His Majesty Sultan Muhammad V also congratulated Brigadier General Datuk Abdul Latif Ahmad for being granted the Prominent Honorary Degree in Strategic Studies and International Relations.

His Majesty said, this is a special recognition towards the good work, contribution, sacrifices and specialisation that has been rendered by Abdul Latif to the nation.

At the 2017 UPNM Convocation, 653 graduates received their scrolls. From the grand total, seven received their doctorates (PhD) and 26 received Master Degree in Science (MSc).

Meanwhile, 558 graduates received their Bachelor Degrees that includes 368 Cadet Officers and 190 civilian graduates. Among them 62 graduates received their diplomas.

The convocation also witnessed 26 Bachelor Degree graduates and three Diploma holders received their Academic Awards.
