KUALA LUMPUR – Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah urged the public to put an end to “political intimidation”, speaking outside the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman on Thursday.
“Intimidation and political violence have no place in the formation of a new democratic Malaysia,” she said.
Maria has recently received many threats since she announced Bersih 5 rally that is scheduled for Nov 19 next month.
Maria and many members from several non-governmental organizations and civil society presented a memorandum to the Inspector-General of Police at Bukit Aman, seeking for police protection for Maria and Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan and other Bersih members.
This week, Maria received a Whatsapp photo from an anonymous individual. The photo which seems to be manipulated by Photoshop shows an IS executor holding a knife as if he`s going to behead her. She also found her son`s car splashed in red paint at 2.30am on Thursday.
“Yesterday at 9.47pm I received a whatsapp message with an IS threat to my three sons, Mandeep Singh, Ambiga & me. They posted to me photos of an IS executor with a blade and ready to behead us,” she wrote on her Facebook
“When we started the BERSIH convoy, we have met with verbal death threats by Ali Tinju, false accusations and displays of degrading behaviour from Jamal Yunos, harassment, churn out fitnah against me, threaten and beat up our peaceful BERSIH supporters.” She added.
However, the person who posted that photo to her is not identified yet.
