Malaysian road users will be more prepared to escape from any landslide incident when the Landslide Risk Navigator Map (LaRiMap) is ready for public use by the middle of 2017.

Vice Chancellor of Infrastucture University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL), Prof. Dr. Roslan Zainal Abidin said, road users will have to buy the Apps at RM20 to RM30 to access the LaRiMap which is an advanced extension of high risked Rain Induced Landslide (RIL) areas converted into the Google Maps.

He added, with the LaRiMap, road users will have to fill in the date and place of travel in their smart phones  and the map will indicate the situation of the RIL via colours that is red being critical; orange very high risk; yellow is moderate and green indicates low risk.

“The actual situation of the RIL is monitored by the radar at the centre of the Civil Engineering Faculty, University Teknologi  MARA (UiTM)  Jengka, Pahang,” he said.

The  Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM becomes the centre for monitoring LaRiMap as it is the research and invention projects done by a group of the university’s academic staff as a contribution to the Malaysians safety against landslides.

Dr. Roslan further explained, landslides are caused by several factors mainly, rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility , slope length, slope steepness, cover management and conservative practices. As such, it is not right to blame the rain solely whenever a landslide happens.

Dr. Roslan said, apart from LaRiMap, his team had also invented the Apps for warning signages (ALWS) along the roads with high risked RIL. The signages are interactive with the road users.  Cameras and warning lights will be applied to enable road users to contact the relevant authorities in case of critical or emergency situations arise.

He also highlighted that the development of the two technologies (LaRiMap and ALWS) took them a year with the aid of a research grant of RM10, 000. The research projects were based on few  landslide incidents due to the failure of slopes along the main roads that caused injuries and deaths of many road users  and loss of belongings.

Meanwhile the co-operation between  Infrastucture University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL) and University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in developing  the Landslide Risk Navigator Map (LaRiMap) had won them a gold medal in the Invention, Innovation and Design Exposition 2016 (IIDEX2016) recently.

For the landslide warning signage (ALWS) the collaboration received silver medal. The IIDEX 2016 was participated by 700 participants including from universities, colleges and high schools in Malaysia.

Held at the Dewan Agung Tuanku Canselor (DATC), UiTM Shah Alam, the exhibition was the initial stage for any new technology and inventions exposed to the public.

IIDEX2016 was organised by the Research Innovation Business Unit (RIBU), Institute of Research Management (IRMI), UiTM Shah Alam with the aim to provide a platform for researchers to explore a new agreement besides tapping the potentials for co-operation through research collaborations.

The two projects that won the gold and silver medals were participated by 10 academic staff from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM , Pahang campus including Dr. Adnan Derahman, Mohd. Fairuz Bachok, Rohaya Alias, Mohd. Razmi Zainuddin, Ahmad Amzari Yaacob, Amminudin Ab. Latiff, Noor Safwan Muhamad, Siti Hawa Rosli, Mohd. Fakri  Muda and Mohd.
