SEPANG, 14 May 2016 – Former Australian superbike champion Cameron Donald showed his class in the Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) by cruising to an easy victory at the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship 2016 Fassi Malaysian Round at the Sepang circuit today.
Representing SBR Racing Team, Donald, who is preparing for the upcoming Isle of Man TT race, won the opening race of the Superbike Championship in 17 minutes 47.598 seconds – more than 12 seconds ahead of second-placed privateer Colin Edward Butler.
Malaysian Ahmad Fuad Baharuddin of Team Project X took third place in the eight-lap battle around the newly-laid 5.543km tarmac circuit. Defending champion Rajini Krishnan of India took fourth place.
In the Supersports Championship, Germany’s Ismael Smajli took victory in Race 1, fending off the challenge from two Malaysians – Mohd Akmal Hisham Mustafa and Joe Teo Yew, who took second and third place respectively.
In an earlier race on Saturday morning, Fuad’s younger brother, Ahmad Nashrul took victory in the Superstock Championship. The Team Project X rider beat teammate Mohd Radzi Omar on his Kawasaki ZX10R machine to open his 2016 account with a maximum 25 championship points.
Race 2 for all three categories will be held on Sunday with the Superstock and Supersport races run before the main events, which are Race 2 of both the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship and the FIM Supersport World Championship featuring local hero Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin.
Incorporated as one of the support races, the MSBK Superbike Championship race has been slotted as the final event in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship 2016 Fassi Malaysian Round calendar.
