The ABC Four Corners journalists Linton Besser and cameraman Levent Eroglu were arrested in Sarawak for not having complied with Malaysian police instructions during an event attended by the Prime Minister in Sarawak last night around 8.35pm.
The two Australians journalists had crossed a security line and aggressively tried to approach Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who was on an official visit to the Darul Ehsan Mosque at Kampung Haji Baki in Sentosa, said Sarawak CID chief Dev Kumar.
ABC said the crew was detained by Malaysian police last night while reporting on a local political issue. They have not been charged with any offence, but Their passports were seized.
ABC did not mention what type of political issue the two Australian journalists were reporting on, but other sources said they have been in Malaysia for several days researching the story on the multi-billion dollar corruption scandal involving Malaysia’s 1MDB state investment fund as well as the murder of a glamorous Mongolian translator, Altantuya Shaaribuu, whose death has been linked to the country’s highest office, an Australian Business Review correspondent reported today.
