PUTRAJAYA: International television channel Al Jazeera should apologize for publishing an alleged false report on how the government of Malaysia handled the illegal immigrants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Security and Senior Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, as an international media, Al Jazeera is expected to exercise high ethics in its report but instead it contains unclear facts and is full of baseless accusations.
The video presentation with the title “Locked up in Malaysia’s Lockdown”, the Al Jazeera 101 East report which was published on July 3 and featured a 25-minute video that accused the Malaysian government of arresting illegal immigrants under the guise of public health and safety.
“They accused us of being racist when illegal immigrants were detained by the authorities based on the Immigration Act. I challenge Al-Jazeera to name a country which gives freedom to illegal immigrants to move around freely in the country,” Ismail said in a press conference held here today.
“The immigration laws in most countries are the same as Malaysia’s,” he said.
Ismail said, 68,829 foreigners with documents have been screened with 2,579 have been detected positive COVID-19 and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Ismail added, 4,924 undocumented foreigners placed at four immigration detention depots were also screened for COVID-19. From that 777 individuals were found positive and were sent to MAEPS in Serdang and sent them back to their countries when they were negative from the corona virus.
“The government did not leave them unattended and die in their places,” Ismail added.
Ismail also pointed out that Al-Jazeera had not released the truth when they published children were handcuffed but in reality, they were with their parents when placed in the immigration detention depots.
“Al-Jazeera did not want to publish the good factors that have been implemented by the Malaysian government,” he reiterated. –Malaysia World News
