MINNEAPOLIS: The Minneapolis police officer who was filmed kneeling on the neck of a handcuffed African American man has been charged with murder on Friday, after three nights of violent protests.
Derek Chauvin, a white American officer was caught on Monday in a viral video pressing his knee into the neck of George Floyd who was pleading ” I can’t breath, I can’t breath”, for almost 10 minutes.
When Floyd went motionless he was taken to a hospital where he declared dead.
The court today charged the officer with one count of unintentionally murder and one count of negligent manslaughter.
The death of the African American sparked violent protests and riots in the US for the past 3 days.
Protesters demand for justice for the victim and his family as well as tougher punishment for the officer and his colleagues who were with him during the arrest of Floyd.
All the four officers were fired from their posts on Tuesday while investigations are going on.
