4,346 detainees in 3 immigration depots screened for COVID-19


PUTRAJAYA MAY 25 – The government has decided to place all illegal migrants who had been detected with positive COVID-19 at the Quarantine and Treatment of COVID-19 Centre in MAEPS , Serdang, Selangor.

The MAEPS has now become the centre for illegal immigrants from three immigration depots namely Bukit Jalil, Semenyih and KLIA, Sepang to get treatment against COVID-19..

Security and Senior Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said, the local COVID-19 patients have been transferred to Sungai Buloh Hospital as they should not be together with the illegal immigrants.

“The COVID-19 treatment centre in MAEPS had been fixed with barbed wires to stop the immigrants without documents to escape from the authorities.

“These detainees do not possess any personal documents and it is difficult to trace their whereabouts outside,” Ismail said in a press conference held here today.

The minister added, they are 1,654 detainees in Semenyih Immigration Depot, 1,334 in Bukit Jalil and 1,358 in KLIA depot.

“Once a detainee has been detected with COVID-19, all of them in the depot have to undergo swab tests including the staff and also those handling the food. Those with positive COVID-19 will be sent for treatment in MAEPS and those negative will stay and be screened for the second time later,” he said on the question of the safety of front liners at the detention depots.

Regarding the Hindu wedding held at a temple in Serdang yesterday, Ismail said, the police had taken action on the organizer and also on those present at the event.

“The Minister of National Unity had agreed with the leaders of other religions including the Hindu that the permission to pray at the worship place will take effect on June 10 and only 30 people could attend at any one time.

“The believers could only attend the important prayer function example the Christians at the church on Sunday while the others depending on their prayer’s day,” he said.

According to Ismail, the act to hold a wedding yesterday had been wrong and not complying with the SOP under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO). –Malaysia World News
