KUALA LUMPUR 7 April – The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) had sacked 10 of its staff who were found guilty of drug abuse offences since last year, said Chief of RMN, Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin.

Ahmad Kamarulzaman said the 10 who had been sacked effective from yesterday were found guilty of drug abuse offences involving “ketum” and “shabu” (methamphetamine).

They either have been found guilty in the Civil Courts or Armed Forces (Court Martial) or have been involved in drug abuse for five to 10 years. They are young and from the low ranking staff. Some of them are married and have families, he added

“It is very sad that we have to terminate their services. There is no compromise in drug abuse as it is of high risk to the services. Nobody can escape if they are involved in drugs. The Royal Malaysian Navy with the support of the National Anti-Drugs Agency Malaysia and the Royal Malaysian Police are consistently conducting surveys before recruiting and during their services with RMN.”

Ahmad Kamarulzaman told reporters after he bestowed higher ranks to 11 RMN officials including one from the Navy Volunteer Reserve Force team of RMN and 39 members of different ranks at KD Sri Gombak, Jalan Padang Tembak here today.

He also added, drug abuse is a dangerous threat to the military services as well as the nation-building, and as such, it should be handled holistically at all levels starting from home, society, and the government.

Ahmad Kamarulzaman also mentioned the 83rd Anniversary of RMN on 27th April which will be celebrated all over the country with activities mainly concentrated at RMN Bases in Lumut, Perak and Teluk Sepanggar, Sabah.

The Lumut RMN Base will have its Armada Open Day on 28th until 30th April alongside with Mini MAHA which is a joint effort with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry.

The event will also give the public who had missed visiting the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA’17) to have a closer look at the RMN ships.

Meanwhile, on 27th April, he added, the Minister of Defence, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein will  be announcing and launching two territories namely the East and the West in Teluk Sepanggar RMN Base. At the function, the minister will also appoint the Commander of East Armada and West Armada.
